i wonder if '30' was just speculation on the part of
someone.

actually, now that i think of it, since the article
was from summer '51, salinger would have had at that
time 28 stories to his credit. the 28th was 'pretty
mouth and green my eyes', published the very week 'the
catcher' appeared. (this in 'the new yorker' after
they had refused to run an excerpt from the novel.)

if i recall correctly, whit burnett was going to
publish a volume of saliner's stories after the war.
i think the possible table of contents (??) is in
their letters or ??. but the funding fell through,
much to burnett's chagrin and salinger's
none-too-zen-detached anger.
