So THAT'S what that's called. Good god. The things I learn on this list.
That is, this old guy sets up a card table on 7th Avenue every weekend and
sells used books. Most of the time, he's got titles like 'The Virgin and
the Millionaire' or 'Lawyers With Moral Problems' or 'Heroes and Bad Guys
with Guns.' Okay, so those aren't really the titles, but you get the
idea.
Anyway, he had an old copy of Uncle Wiggly. I picked it up and looked it
over. The book was made of cheap paper stock -- more of a comic book than
anything else -- and had a picture of a grinning rabbit on the cover. He
looked like the happiest damn rabbit in the world. I think he had a
basket with carrots in it or something.
The old guy says to me, "That's an old children's book, you know."
I smiled. "I know."
I had no cash on me, so I put it back. The next weekend, I stopped by his
card table again, but Uncle Wiggly was gone.
