over the weekend, while browsing in my town's
university library, i noticed that the entire nov/dec
1942 issue of 'story' magazine is devoted to a novella
by whit burnett and john pen: 'immortal bachelor: the
love story of robert burns'.
the exact epigraph to chapter 1 is:
'...Comin' through the rye..."
And the opening page has burns and pals as youths
singing snatches of the song, particularly 'gin a body
meet a body comin' through the rye'.
i'm assuming jds was a subscriber to 'story'. could
be wrong; and it's sheer coincidence.
though i doubt it.
