hi all,
i, too, believe the oprah winfrey has inspired reading in a public that,
unfortunately, was not reading very much. i applaud her for that--and think
she has made some fine choices (hegi: stones from the river, was wonderful).
i do think, however, that as a society we don't read. even writers don't
seem to be reading much, judging by how many submit fiction to our new
literary magazine, bananafish, but don't bother to subscribe. it really
amazes me since i thought that writers would make up the bulk of our
subscribers. not so.
i think oprah could really do a service to emerging writers by featuring
literary magazines on one of her shows. who know, the next jds may have a
story in an obscure one even as i write this.
have a good day!
