Actually the metaphor was not so clear in the movie, but in the book 
on which it was based, "Shoeless Joe" by W.P. Kinsella, the writer he 
goes to find actually is JDS.  It's an entertaining book, although 
it's endless praise of the wonder of baseball might be a little much 
for someone who is not a fan of the sport. ( I am so I enjoyed it.)
