1) Esme says more about war in it's use of silence and deep, unspoken love
than most other things ever written about war.

2) The issue of criticism and reading salinger is not automatically phony
because an author tends to not like his critics...criticism is a valid art
and if it is done well, it won't be phony, and if it is done poorly, it
will be phony
