`...believe it or not,' writes Will, `I'm not the least bit horrified if my "section man" work amounts to more intelligence...' `Vairy interessing...' (as Camille incorrectly attributes to Boris Karloff.) Adjusting my wire rimmed specs & laying aside the cigar for a moment, I examine that tell-tale: `amounts to more intelligence...' Amounts to....amounts to... Something of a paraphrasis, I suspect. Is that a condensation of `adds to the amount of intelligent understanding available to the generality' or does zee patient write `amounts to' meaning - half consciously - `that indicates the essence of things....' as in: `what that amounts to, buddy, is one helluva big brain...' or, `that don't amount to a hillabeans....' ?
