Hey, People,

I was just thinking about how Holden has to die. I mean, the fact that
he sees the worldliness that he's supposed to buy into, but doesn't... I
mean, he's not exactly successful, is he? Not exactly well-adjusted.
What are the alternatives?
Well, he could die, in fact, has a bit of a death wish. Dying on time
solves a lot of problems.
Otherwise, he accumulates birthdays, but how long can he last like this?
In all probability, he, too would turn "phony" just to get along in the
world and eventually pass this "catcher" thing off as a passing phase
while growing up, in essence, killing off Holden's essence.
The only other alternative I see is him ending his days like "The Snows
of Kilimanjaro" where he, in the last hours of his life, feels his
regrets for not buying into phoniness and simultaneously congratulating
himself for not.
I guess what I'm saying is, you can grant Holden all the nobility you
want, but the price he pays is a heavy one, and I'm not certain how long
he can maintain it.

Namaste,

Thor
