Well, Jim, Actually, I wasn't trying to idealize the east, because, yes, even sects withing the same religions have had horrible encounters. In Christianity, we need look no farther than Ireland for a western example. However, what I was saying was that we are in a seriously iconoclastic age as far as Christianity is concerned, and we wouldn't see nearly the postings attacking Salinger's religious slant in a particular book if he were comparing two eastern religions. Not me personally, but we as a culture tend to idealize Eastern philosophies and currently bash Christianity. In other words, the posting "Doesn't it bother you, the Christian overtones..." would never have been posted if it were "Doesn't it bother you, the Zen overtones in..." Y'know what I mean? Namaste, Thor <<How many postings do you think we'd be seeing if he were drawing Zoroastrian/Tibettan Buddhist parallel lines? Just a thought....>> That was a good post, Thor. But my answer would be, Just as many. Let's not idealize the east. The East have had their religious wars too. <<Isn't it possible to find wisdom and love and beuaty and meaning from somewhere other than Jesus, Buddha, etc.? Dave>> And the answer to this question would be, No :) It isn't. Our religious traditions taught us what love, wisdom, beauty and meaning Is long before we distilled them into philosophies. If you dropped the etc. from your sentence, you'd get a lot more people to agree with you, though.
