Hi all. I've been reading your emails for a while but never had the courage to write till now. The reason is that my English is not very good. I am from South America, and I am still learning. I am shy in written English. I just thought I'd write something about that thing about adults not understanding Salinger's stories. It's not an opinion, just my personal story of how I came to know Salinger. I first read The Catcher in the Rye in English. It was a gift from my father. I was a teenager and he was in his sixties. I think it was a marvellous thing for him to do, knowing how overprotective he was (and still is), and knowing that he doesn't agree with some of the things in Catcher, though he loves the story (this is more complicated but hard to explain). I know that I would have never read Salinger if it wasn't for him, because Salinger is not known in South America. My father knew about him because he went to school in the States. Anyway, I was just thinking about what a nice gift that book was, especially coming from my old dad. mc
