Believe it or not I actually heard the word derived from telephones! (I
don't know whether it's true or not but bear with me ...) Everyone knows
what it is to put on your `phone' voice - which, yes, is usually pretty
phony and superficial - and that entered the popular lexicon. Has anyone
else heard of this or am I imagining things? Actually, it's quite
interesting - a phone conversation denotes both closeness and distance ...
you could say a lot about all the phone calls in TCIR.
