"Hapworth" is a break-up with the reading and publishing industries.
It's surely purposefully indulgent and willingly offputting. The idea
came up a few years ago on this list that Salinger might be
republishing the story as a means of fulfilling a divorce settlement
involving contracts and royalties, but also as a way of reminding the
world how little regard he has for his literary fame.
