It probably is, but if it helps you understand where I'm coming from...

I read Saussere's _Course in General Linguistics_ only to understand what 
Derrida was Griping about in _Of Grammatology_.  From there I've read bits 
and pieces of Levi-Strauss (not the jeans :) ), and some other odds and ends 
in semiology. (As an aside, the most disturbing thing about Derrida is that 
he can write about Tristes Tropiques and keep a straight face :) ).  I used 
the word "referent" and I don't think Saussere did...I must have picked it up 
from somewhere else...I've also done some reading in Linguistics as it 
relates to Biblical hermeneutics.

ANYWAYS, needless to say, the terminology used by people talking linguistics 
isn't uniform, and my use of the terms is pretty hodge-podge as a result.  
When I was thinking of visual icons as a sign I was thinking more in terms of 
Levi-Strauss than Saussere, and that's off the top of my  head :)
