Anthropologically speaking, the more specialized an organism becomes, the
less adaptive it is.  For example if you can only eat one special kind of
banana and all of the crops of that banana are destroyed, you starve.  If
you can eat many different kinds of fruit, then you have lots to choose
from even if one kind becomes unavailable to you.  Intelligence is only
adaptible if it enables you to develop skills (social, professional,
whatever) to be more generalized.
