Invisiboy is right about it being a fine line. Jake, it does not matter
whether you charge or not. Believe me, I've dealt directly with
Salinger's representatives, and they have made it clear that we are not
free to quote widely. We operate under the principle of "fair use," and
"quot[ing] as much as we want as long as we aren't charging anything" is
not fair use. I strongly urge you to look at the link to fair use at
www.roughdraft.org/JDS/ to get a sense of the legal issues.

As long as we stay in the guidelines of fair use, then we're OK. If
not, we're not ... and since I'm in no position to hire a lawyer to
defend this list from Salinger's legal team, I'd have to fold the list
if things got out of hand.

I think you might see it differently if you read the legal citations and
if you read the Ian Hamilton book.
