Even after revealing the family's problems, Ms. Salinger still hopes
her father will understand her and be a good grandfather to her son.
I don't think Mr. Salinger was being a phoney so much as believing he
knew he could never really live his own ideals as perfectly as he
wanted to, but also knew the best thing he could do is try...no, not
phoney, just human, will
