Sorry to do this, but,
<snip>Through sheer force of will, it seems
like the man tried to live what he believed.
But sometimes the desire just isn't enough.</snip>

That's, maybe, the whole problem. If what you're saying is true, then he should
have learned in all of his studies of Zen, Christianity, etc. that the way to
live what you believe isn't through sheer will or even desire. It's through
humility and being guided and led to do what is right. Unfortunately for all of
you hermits out there, you're going to need Other people to help you out in
being guided and led, and in fact, Other people DO guide you as you come into
contact with them -- to resist that is to be untrue to yourself and your
"beleifs". Your life will never be what you want it to be if you try to make
your life one way or another -- your life will only ever be
what-you-are-trying-to-make-it.

That is, if you'll let me wax philosophical for a moment... and if it is true
that he is living a willful (prideful?) life.

I'm not saying that he is, necessarily, willfully resisting the guidance of his
God/Others-in-his-life/etc. Maybe he's doing exactly what he should be doing...

Josh
