I have spent the past two weeks with Peggy and Joyce. After finishing
'Dream Catcher' I went on to my first real reading of 'At Home in the
World.' 'DC' was spellbinding for the first section (pre-Peggy's birth);
the second section (Peggy up to age 12) was sad and depressing to see Mr.
and Mrs. Salinger as they were presented; the last section (Peggy off to
boarding school up through Peggy writing the memoir) was overly long, but it
was nice to see her pull her life together. (The generous selection of
photos, God spare me, clinches it as a must-buy.) And the Maynard was, I
thought, very fascinating, especially given all of the 'she's the devil'
press. I recommend both books.

I won't (once again) recount my 'early days' of reading Salinger (Scottie's
had me rolling on the floor). But I will wonder out loud: What a range of
reactions to JDS's works. Scottie stands by 'Catcher' and 'Esme' and damns
the Glasses; Matt with only 'DD Smith' and 'The Laughing Man', at least now;
will with (I think) almost all of the work, but needs to reread SAI and
Hapworth; Tim with 'Catcher', but the Glass stories with some reservations;
and there is the last message in my jds inbox: Cecilia's elegant response.
Three months ago I would have voted for the post-'Teddy' work over the
pre-'Teddy' work. (I wonder where that puts me in DSM IV, Scottie?). Not
having read any Salinger since then, I really can't say which work I favor
now.
