I would add Bessie Glass as a major character. Though I don't I subscribe
to
Som Ranchan's over-emphasis on Bessie's centrality to the Glass Saga, she
certainly is a fully realized female character and very life-affirming.

 (As an aside, I *finally* got a copy of Ranchan's 'An Adventure in Vedanta:
JD Salinger's The Glass Family', and sad to say, was disappointed. As a
former student of his in the early '70s (the book was published in '89), I
can say he was terrific in class. The book certainly looks hastily written;
way too much direct quotation (beyond fair use?); and a lamentable absence
of knowledge of the reputable parts of Salinger criticism.) Nonetheless,
I'm still grateful beyond words for the chance to have sat in his classes.
