Subject: This mailing list has no mayonaise

Well, it's certainly been quiet of late on this mailing list. I reitterate
my best regards for Tim O'Connor and hope that he is recovering.
I just dug out my hand-written copy of Salinger's 1945 (?) story 'This
Sandwich Has No Mayonaise'. I think that the last time I read it was in 1960
or '61, right about the time that 'Franny and Zooey' came out in book form.
It's been a long while and I'd pretty much forgotten it. All I remembered
that it was about a Holden Caulfield. I say "a Holden Caulfield" as opposed
to "The Holden Caulfield" because the chronology is not consistent between
this story and 'Catcher'.
What a great forgotten story! I chortled very loudly over my morning coffee
when that GI responded to some banal comment with 'You're alive, ain't ya!'.
Although I admire Salinger's controversial 'Hapworth' and 'S:AI', I do
believe those mid-40s stories that were never collected into 'Another 9
stories' are among his best work. I'll go so far as to say that 'Sandwich'
is his best uncollected short story (apart from 'Hapworth').
This is a pretty aimless injection into the bloodstream of the mailing list,
I'll admit, but I'm trying to think of something provocative to say. If JDS
published a new story tomorrow we'd have something to talk about!
Best wishes
Matthew Jones.
