The story was originally published in the October l945 issue of
Esquire...and I think it may have been reprinted in "The Armchair
Esquire."

I wish Salinger would reconsider publishing his early stories. Some
of them are excellent and most show the young writer experimenting
and developing some of the excellence his later work consistently
shows. There are also some unpublished stories that seemed
wonderful...one in particular, "An Ocean Full of Bowling Balls" is
incredible. But seeing as there is a struggle to get "Hapworth" into
a book form (I called Orchisis Press last week--they still expect it
to out, but not this year...), I doubt the other 21 uncollected
stories and the unpublished stories will reappear while Salinger is
alive.

However, I hope we can continue to talk about them. If anyone else is
reading "This Sandwich" I'll be quiet now and listen for your post,
will
