I've always felt that he was speaking in the singular all throughout the
book whenever he addressed the reader as "you." It just seems to me to be
his way, if that makes any sense. Not that it has much bearing on this
topic, but if I were writing a similar memoir, or any memoir at all, and I
addressed the reader as "you," I'd be doing it in the singular even if it
was meant for multiple readers. It's more personal that way.

Hi Motoko!
Since you are Japanese, I'd like to ask you a favour:
I run a website called THE CATCHER IN THE RYE AND RELATED MATTERS
http://mitglied.tripod.de/BerndWahlbrinck/index.htm
In my INTERNAL ASPECTS #14 I have been trying to collect the first
sentence of the novel from all kinds of languages into which CR was
translated. One big reason for this is that in German for example the
translator has to decide whether to use DU or SIE or IHR for YOU -
depending on whether he thinks Holden is talking to a friend or a
young person, an adult, or a group of people.
I was wondering whether you could send me the Japanese translation of
the first sentence (in our letters, though), also indicating whether
the YOU is singular or plural. You might also comment on any other
interesting aspect concerning that first sentence (or the japanese
translation on the whole). Maybe some fish are also interested in
that matter.
