I can't speak for others, but we're doing OK in these precincts.
Frazzled, but OK. I walked out the door this morning, turned the
corner, and it was a straight, short shot from the front door to
the World Trade Center and the horrifying view of it, in flames
and smoke.
I shot some pictures of the buildings burning -- the sight was truly
riveting -- and I never suspected what would shortly happen. Within
half an hour, it all fell apart and nothing was the same, literally
and metaphorically.
Now it's all lost. I remember watching those skyscrapers being
built quite a while ago when I was a kid; now, amazingly, they're
gone.
So, it's astonishing, tonight. The streets are quiet; there is
almost no traffic except for the emergency vehicles going to and
from hospitals; there are lots of pedestrians on the sidewalks,
along with dog-walkers, hookers, people-watchers, and a huge
contingent of curb-and-cafe-sitters. If it weren't such a shocking
and tragic day, this would be a magical evening -- but instead,
we're left imagining the heartbreaking facts, and the unthinkable
numbers of injured and dead we're going to hear about over the next
few days.
But we're durable (we like to think), and we'll bear with this (we
hope), and we'll manage to survive this time around too (we expect).
We save our prayers for the people who will really need them, and we
persevere in the best ways we know how to do so, and we go on. What
else can we do?
I hope that answers your question. At least, it's the best I can
describe from one fellow's point of view.
Regards.
