Why, yes, I think so. If it weren't a manifestation of self, it wouldn't
be yours. You'd be writing stock characters with no soul if you tried to
take the self out of it. You'd be getting most of the formulaic crap that
gets churned out of Hollywood, I'd say. The good stuff necessitates the
self.

That's why publishing is such a difficult thing. That metaphorical skirt
again. Because when you spill your guts out onto the page, you hate to
hear that they aren't pretty. And when you publish, someone's bound to
come around and tell you they aren't.

I like that image. Stories as reading entrails.
