As a high-schooler in a rural town, I know the agonies of grammar
being shoved down your throat. We have these "instruction guides" some
principal that only stayed for three months (he gave up after that) thought
of. They are campus-wide symbols of hatred- they are bright red, and fat,
laden with (ironically) tons of unintentional grammar and spelling mistakes.
I am the editor-in-chief of our school paper and of our creative writing
magazine, and some of our best writers have such terrible grammar, their
otherwise beautiful message doesn't come across as clearly as it should. My
favorite teachers say it is because my generation does not read. (Some of
us, anyway...) I have to agree wholeheartedly. I think most of my
generation's problems can be traced back to the fact that we do not read
enough.
