"autumn day" is early forgettable rilke.
the real stuff is in 'new poems' (my preferred
translation by edward snow), 'requiems' (trans. j. b.
leishman), 'the notebooks of malte laurids brigge'
(trans. herter norton), 'the duino elegies' (trans. j.
b. leishman/stephen spender), 'the sonnets to orpheus'
(trans. herter norton), and 'uncollected poems'
(trans. edward snow). i've been told that a lot of
rilke gets lost in translation. i found the gass book
fabulous.
