In all of this discussion I have been reading, I have failed to see an answer to a question that is plaguing me. If Franny is not pregnant, then why does Salinger go to all the trouble to beat us over the head with the fact that they are having sex? If there is another use for this information in this story, I would love to hear that theory. I, too, have a feeling that Franny could be pregnant. I'm not sure if that's the point of the piece, or not. But the possibility is there. To me it's not the crux of the story. What I find interesting is the basic dynamic of this relationship. All that I need to know is that "something" else is going on that no one is talking about. I realize this might sound like a trivial read of Franny, but sometimes I just like to enjoy the story. I know it will be a Coke vs. Pepsi kind of question on this list forever. All I know is that my literary thirst is quenched, and I am pleased. Marc W.
