I have read this debate for some time and remained silent, but with the
information that JDS may have had a pregnant wife around I think I will speak
up. When I was pregnant for the first time it was incredably spiritual for
me. I did some real soul searching, not unlike Franny was doing. The
description of her behavior in the resturant and Lane's refrerence to how
much time between "visits" all lead me to believe that sh's experience
(either their own or a partner's) may be quite different then mine I realize.
But to say that it cheapens the intent of the story to imply Franny is
pregnant I can not agree with. I have never felt more spiritual, beautiful,
or afraid then my pregnancies. For me it was much more then swollen ankles
and puking. It was the closest thing to a miricle I know and perhaps Franny
felt this way, too. Perhaps not, ask JDS.
