Those who feel Franny's spiritual crisis is brought on by pregnanvy are not implying it's a hormonal or biological reaction. Just a reaction to a life changing event. If it were a male character, I believe we would wonder what event prompted this change. Just as we have ofted debated here about Seymore's suicide and what event lead him to that decision. After once again reading "F&Z" I have come to only one conclusion on this matter. It is possible that Franny is pregnant. I can't say what Salinger's intentions were, but Franny does undergo a spirtual crisis and the motivation for that is not made crystal clear. Pregnancy is an option. It may not be the reason Salinger intended, but there are clues there that suggest it. It is MY read only. However, I don't feel anyone implied that Franny is undergoing her spiritual evaluation because of hormanal reasons. I feel any male character learning his girlfriend was pregnant would undergo a similiar emotional change, without the aid of hormones. Marc.
