The way I always saw it was that Salinger uses his talent as a writer to lead the reader to think that upon first glance of the story you would conclude that Franny was pregnant. It isn't untill you delve deeper into the story that you learn that her crisis is more than that. Also remember: Franny, the story, came out first and there was a long period of time before Zooey, the sequel, came out. Could it be that Salinger wanted everyone to think that Franny was pregnant and used a Hills Like White Elephants, type thechnique to tell the story and then with Zooey, he decided to take it to another level and in effect say, "Ha ha, fooled ya' It's deeper than a pregnancy!" Keep in mind that even Updike, upon reviewing Franny thought that she was pregnant AND that the Franny in 'Zooey' was a different person(!) Before that starts a new thread, he admited he was wrong. . . . and THAT's one to grow on! -Scott
