I just don't see how anyone who has read Noam Chomsky, >Shakespeare or Krishnamurti can have the time and patience for >the emotional manipulation and enforcement of stereotypes (not to >mention the trance-inducing lull of advertisements) of a medium >that is increasingly mean-spirited and wallows in sarcasm as if it >were an advanced form of wit. I remember Holden saying that he hated the movies but he always went. "It was so disgusting I couldn't take my eyes off of it." SO maybe I think Holden would have watched television because sometimes it's entertaining and motivating whether good or bad. I enjoy TV programs even though I think it's phony and mostly valueless. Maybe that's exactly what Salinger was trying to say of the duality.
