Any decent bookstore...hell, even a B. Dalton or a Waldenbooks should carry
"The Gnostic Gospels" in stock by Elaine Pagels. (Yes, Heinz Pagels' wife.)
She provides a great context and distillation of the Nag Hammadi Library
which you can find in any decent university bookstore under that name. The
Nag Hammadi Library is all 500+ pages they found translated as is. Therefore
it can be kind of a struggle to get through, but it's fascinating. Elaine's
book will give you enough of a grounding to start off with though. She even
provides much more historical context for things such as the point in time
when God was both a Father AND a Mother. Very compelling reading. You'll want
to shout from the rooftops after you find out what religion was REALLY all
about a few thousand years ago. And if all that excites you, try out The
Women's Encyclopedia of Myths and Secrets by Barbara Walker which has the
most incredible research on the derivations of things that get taken for
granted every day of the week, for example exactly when where and why Mary
became a virgin. It's a doorstop of a book, but it's one of the best
reference materials around.
