> You see I'm grateful to Ms. Maynard for the mention and beautiful image of > a room sized safe containing Mr. Salinger's unpublished writing. *ROOM* sized safe ??? My God, I hadn't heard this detail before! I was thinking `slightly-bigger-than-a *breadbox* safe! > I think Mr. Salinger could stun the world > with the riches in that safe and he may just enjoy life too much not to > watch it unfold... This occurs to me too ... what with the mass media like it is, and having observed the way they went so ape over Hapworth. You've got to hand it to him though. He is one of the few people who has the media in the palm of his hand. They'll jump and write editorials and huge articles about already published stories that in the event don't get republished anyway. There's not too many writers who would command that kind of attention for so little. Heck, even the President of the United *States* can't play the media that effectively! (: I wonder if the Hapworth thing was just an experiment to see how the media would treat him. Perhaps he *never* intended to publish it; perhaps it was just to see how we'd all react. And I guess on viewing the reaction - no discreet little columns in obscure literary journals but instead, feature articles in countries halfway round the world - he may have firmly slammed the door of said safe. Although you never know. But you can guess ...
