You need to meet a few more artists. Read some more biographies :) You
may not still agree, of course, but you'll sure understand Why some
people think that way ;)

Jim

Well, Jim, as an artist myself, I also disagree with the
artist-as-asshole theory. In fact, I resent it quite a bit. I think
you may be confusing a couple of points.
First, there are a large number of assholes from all walks of life, art
is no different. I've found that the asshole-artists get shunned even
from within the artistic community, which makes them the exception
rather than the rule.
Next, artistic careers (acting, painting, writing, etc.) do tend to lend
themselves to a bit of eccentricity. It seems to be a forgivable given
that an artistic person has quirks and eccentricities that "normal"
people couldn't get away with. Whether artistic careers tend to attract
eccentrics or that people simply take advantage of the ability to live
out pet eccentricities consequence-free because their profession allows
it, I'm not sure.
Still, I find your criteria lacking for such a generalization.

Namaste,

Thor
