Except, of course, when one is reading Salinger, during which period of
transcendence, one actually merges souls with the author, not only
accessing his every intention down to the last imaginable topographical
lump and bump, but sending waves of empathetic bliss rolling over the
glassy floors of very heaven and jarring even God and his Son on their
respective thrones to a higher level of ethereal splendour than that at
which they conduct their ordinary, day-to-day business.
