In my seminar yesterday, I asserted that the mark of an interesting
characcter is _change_ or transformation in a story...I think Lois T
interests me because of the way she goes through pets and husbands until
she does change from being a spoiled "daddy's girl" but maybe some of
the
ladies on our list have a better take on her journey? will

Well, Will,
I think Lois is a great character. She IS a spoiled daddy's girl, but
this coming of age story is so unique because she "comes of age" over a
paeriod of time that is longer and later than most COA stories. She is
crushed & resigns herself to life on life's terms rather than A)fighting
it, (a hopeless battle, in her eyes), or B)remaining in a bleary,
fantasy world. It is a choice that we all face, but the grace with
which she resigns herself is very appropriate to how she was raised &
her view of social decorum. Life is rough, make the best of it. The
choice of fighting, chancing fate and the vissisitudes of life is a
legitimate choice, but she never had the strength of character
necessary, and even if she did, the loss of the baby has taken away her
fire.

Namaste,
Thor
