I think you're right.  I recall having heard the same thing (the song
is, in fact, possibley based on Sting's first hand experience).  My
point about the "sloppy" reference was supposed not to discredit Sting,
but to credit him with a nice touch on the lyrics.  The reference to
Nabokov is casual, and it's intended to be a little skewed, a little
"misremembered."  It works nicely that way.
