you know something? that s one of the biggest compliments you re
likely to get! i m not talking about holden flunking school etc -
that s holden too, but only a tiny or less important part of him (and
i m saying that although i am a teacher myself). i m talking about
the fact that this teacher compares you to a literary character that
probably millions of people have identified with - because he is fed
up with phony people around him, because he is trying to preserve the
innocence of children and, in a sense, his own, because he tries to
rub out the "fuck you" on the wall, because he cares about the ducks,
because he cares about people like james castle and the nuns, etc etc
etc. so that s what i call a compliment!!
