One of the two JDS/Vedanta books has a great account of JDS's probable
progress from casual interest to intense participation in matters
eastern.  I'm still unpacking books and don't know which one. 
_Adventures in Vedanta_ (Som P. Ranchan) and _A Religious Response to
[something in JDS]_ (Elizabeth N. Kurian).  I remember surprising
detail--palpable names and dates I'd never seen anywhere else...
