A certain ongoing mutual abuse has long been
the hallmark of my online dealings with Paul -
from my recurrent suggestion that he drinks too much
to his recent invitation that I fuck off. It had not
occurred to me that interpreting his sporting
obsessions as repressed sexual insecurity could be
seen as anything other than a continuation of
those obviously affectionate exchanges. It seems
to have passed you by that people with a high
regard for each other often engage in that kind
of dialogue.
Or perhaps it didn't. Perhaps the opportunity
for a little high-minded preaching was irresistible.
As usual, I'd underestimated the capacity of
the average American - but especially one whose
attitudes had been cleansed in 'a wholesome liberal
education' - for humourless self-righteousness.
I was amazed when I first joined mailing lists
(where the majority of members seemed to belong
to that extraordinarily priggish establishment,
American academia) to discover such an ocean
of moralising pedantry still existed in the world.
I thought it was long laughed out of existence.
You'd think I'd learn. Yet I never do.
In suggesting that 'within the community' we can
somehow behave differently you are, it seems to me,
simply helping to perpetuate the ghetto. We all,
in varying degrees, belong to that 'community.'
Even you, Jason. Certainly me. (I'd better not
make any further comment about Paul.) If you
really wish to demolish it, why not stop huffing
& puffing & using pompous words like 'dispicable'?
(Incidentally, whatever about Gertrude, I think
you'd be hard pressed to find a better example
of a loud mouthed homophobe drowning out
his qualms with ostentatious manliness than
old Ernie 'fraid of nuttin' Hemingway.)
