Scottie, unlike the leisure suit throw back Tom Jones (Do women really
fawn for him, or is it just the momentum of his 70's disco-propogando
machine still chugging along?) Thom Jones is a gloves off writer writing
muscular prose. He's an ex-vietnam era marine who had a boxing fetish.
He's worn gloves for over 150 amature matches. In `68 he got his bell
rung and has had grand-mals ever since. For war stories he's no Tim
O'Brian, but the man's got range -- even though his whole field of view is
dark. He ate his Wheaties while reading Carver and follows that
tradition - slow fuse. And he's still shouldering the mantle of machismo.
He still thinks men can be heros -- even in the 90's where post-modernism
has robbed us of everything to aspire to. But it's hard. And heros are
rare. But there's still that fight to be fought. He answers to
Schopenhaur -- and maybe that's all I had to say about him.

His first story "Pugilist at Rest" won something or other (Pulitzer?).
Hell, I'm so pumped about it, Scottie, you send me your address and I'll
buy you a copy. Gift from America.
