I think it was the "In the Year 2000" segment from Late Night With Conan
O'Brian that had me (literally) laughing out loud with a joke about
mispronouncing Salinger's name. I don't remember how it went exactly,
but I think it was something like:

In the year 2000. . .
An angry JD Salinger will end over 30 years of silence by calling a
press conference to announce to the world that his name is pronounced
Suh-leeng-er.

I think that's probably a joke that you have to HEAR, and not just read,
in order to get the full effect. But, oh well. I thought it was funny,
anyway.

And while we're talking about it, I might as well ask: How the hell DO
you pronounce Zooey, anyway? I've always just said Zoo-ee, because I've
repeatedly seen Zoe-ee spelled Zoey. I took that extra "o" as reason
enough to pronounce the first syllable as I would the place where wild
animals are on exhibit. I've even looked it up in several dictionaries
and I've occasionally found Zoey but never Zooey. So what is the
"right" way, anyway? I'd like to know, but if I'm doing it wrong, to
hell with you, I'll keep doing it wrong as I have a cat named Zooey or
Zoo-Zoo and he hardly responds to the name as it is; I doubt he'll like
Zoey any better.

Also, how do you pronounce Eloise and Esme? I naturally read them as
El-oyze and Ess-may.

<< And one small note: guns have 6 barrels for 6 bananafish. >>

I don't know much about guns, but I think most of them have just one
barrel. Except things like double-barrel shotguns which have two. I
think you're probably thinking of those six-shooters the ol' gun
slingers had. If I'm right (and I might not be), they have six chambers
and only one barrel. And that's a very specific kind of gun that I
imagine has notably little in common with an Ortgies calibre 7.65
automatic. Maybe Seymour had six bananas in his mouth, but he had a big
gun against his right temple and I don't think the number six had
anything to do with it.

okay,

P.S. Since there was a little bit of talk on-list about it a while
back, I'll mention this here in case anybody particularly gives a damn
(ha): I've sent a deposit and I'm going to Saint John's College. I'll
be in Annapolis this fall.
