Dear All,

Someone - I can't remember who - said something the other day about
how, after reading Hapworth, they felt they never wanted to read
anything else about the Glass family again. That got me to thinking (a
rare occurence these days!) about the impact Hapworth has on the Glass
canon. I have only read it once, but it made me deeply uncomfortable. I
couldn't decide how convincing I found it as the work of a seven year
old genius, or how to view the sexual comments he makes, partivcularly
in light of his marriage with Muriel. As we have discussed previously
on these pages, it forces us to reassess Seymour and how we perceive
him. Perhaps the much-vaunted rerelease is all part of Salinger's
cunning masterplan. He will finally publish, to the great excitement of
his fans, and then everyone will be made so uncomfortable by the story
they'll wish they never asked, and stop bugging him!

So, I was wondering how other people reacted (first impressions) to the
story. Sorry to those who have managed to get their hands on a copy.

Love, Lucy-Ruth
