Punk rock is somehow terribly interesting to me, but not what has developed
now. There seems to be the "punk rock look" that is what the Sex Pistols
began, but it is not what punk rock is to me. Punk rock to me is just a name
and has been so abused that it is barely recognizable any longer. To me the
essence of punk is Iggy Pop, Patti Smith, and others but to me those two are
everything. Iggy Pop was self-destructive and made it through somehow but
its more than that. He's so utterly real, and nobody could ever question
that. His song I wanna be your dog, is beyond anything else what punk rock
really is for me. It's not being afraid to dig deep into the dirt and want
to be controlled and if that isn't glamour I don't know what is. Patti Smith
in the same vessel: she isn't a feminist to me as many people will think.
I've seen her four times in the past 6 months and she's just sheer power of
a poet. She doesn't need any labels because she is a true poet. It is not
contrived but brutally honest. I've heard enough bad poetry. She is a poet
who extends the term for me. Within her are gems shining of exactly what
poetry should be. She lives her world and expresses it in words and yet it
goes so much further than that. She seems to dream and live together. She's
so pretty sometimes like really beautiful like when someone is there and
they don't think anyone is watching and you know their soul is beautiful-
but it doesn't go away when she knows you're watching. I guess this isn't
all relavent, but the recent discussion of punk rock demanded that I say
this. I live right off St. Marks right now. What the world considers punk
now is everywhere here. But I wanna offer this little piece of thought
because I don't think she deserves to be locked in the cage of punk rock,
because although I feel she is a part of that, she is more than punk rock.
She is a real poet. Everyone on earth should at least read her words, hear
her voice, or anything. Besides that I'm wondering (selfishly) if anyone
else digs her like I do. Or Iggy.
