I really like Sven Birkerts writing style-wise, and he's able to make some
wonderful connections (and he really does have some keen insights on
contemporary culture), but yeah, when it comes to prophecy he really does
sound like he's dragging his feet interactively and can only bemoan and
microscopically underline the "isolation" of computers without ever really
investigating the opportunities for intimacy. Sounds to me like said
Cassandras simply don't have modems yet. As a writer who all too well
understands the loneliness of the pursuit, modems sure do make interaction
with other brilliant minds incredibly easy without having to deal with such
proprieteria as hospitality codes. Makes you wonder if the advent of the
telephone brought about such editorials about the end of human interaction
as we know it.

Surf's up!
