Some of the things Mr. Daniel Caine said:
"You probably don't have the brains to talk about Salinger
intelligently. It's easier to think that people who do are somehow
suspect, corrupt, or (let's face it) phony. No one's forcing anyone
else to participate around here, right?
"Please allow me to do just that, without having to put up with the
little-known, but retarded cousins, of the Glass family, who are too
sensitive to bear a word of what I had to say."
I'm more than slightly taken aback by your response.... I'd apologize for
offending you so if I had written any of my previous remarks with
malicious intent. All I wanted to do was remind of what Salinger himself
would have felt about some of the things you said. There is not only one
way to read Salinger, I'll be the first to admit that. I actually love that
about JDS. I was simply adding a perspective, Mr. Daniel A. Caine, and
was NOT attempting any sort of intellectual regulation at all.
Unfortunately, the inferences you drew from my comments were both
overreactive and immature. To call me "phony" simply becuase I disliked
that book quote and thought JDS would as well is ridiculous. Differing
opinions do not warrant the venom of your response. Name-calling? I'm
retarded? And someone else doesn't have the brains to talk about JDS
because he disagrees with you? Who's being the real intellectual snob
here?
This isn't the spirit of the bananafish community. I apologize to everyone
for somehow "instigating" this. I suppose I tried to talk to the wrong
person. Let's put the petty insult-throwing behind us....
