There is plenty of work to be done in this area. I have never heard of
Salinger even mentioning Joyce (who died in 41, and who was, therefore,
game for Salinger's list of greats in a post-1951 lecture he gave to
undergrads, wherein he listed great writers), but I'm certain he read and
learned from him. Zooey is a considerate, modest, and slightly more
accomplihsed Buck Mulligan, for instance, and "Uncle Wiggily" is "The
Dead," right down to the repetition of those signature syllables: "poor
Michael Furey, poor Michael Furey....poor Uncle Wiggily, poor Uncle
Wiggily..."
