Well Scottie, I do have the hamilton book nearby, have been dipping into
it, and in February spent a day reviewing mr. hamilton's materials in an
archive at princeton and agree that his work is self-centered.  I don't
think mr. hamilton did a "hatchet job" but I do see many flaws in his
book.  Primarily, I think mr. hamilton's attempt to focus on the author
and leave the texts and readers in the background of his text was a
mistake I hope to correct in my book, _Salinger's Readers_.  However, I
can at least see from the archives that mr. hamilton was a thourough
researcher, though I also think he was very well funded and probably paid
too much for snooping instead of thinking...will
