> The original point of this thread was helena defending prescription drugs when > Camille made gross generalizations about them I wouldn't say I made gross generalizations. As I think you'll see if you read my post about it (which you probably haven't seeing I only just sent it), I think Helena (and others) missed my point. I'm not for or against; the word (derived from personal experience and several thousand dollars of my family's money wasted on useless therapy) was `sceptical' : no more, no less. Scottie and Tim : Just for the record I was interested in your side of the story. It's so hard to judge what other people are thinking about things and people on the list - a `gossip/backstabbing network' thankfully being impossible here. I almost wish I hadn't innocently stumbled into the argument, because now I feel like the bogeywoman of the list. I'd rather not waste valuable list space defending myself, and it's a shame that myself and others have to spend so much time on `If I offended X I am sorry' posts. I agree (as someone wrote, I can't remember who) that we need someone like Scottie on the list to remind us about how delicate and bruiseable we see our Dr Spock-stained egoes, and that if we all just set them down for awhile and got on with the business of Salinger discussion, it might be a lot easier and more productive. I think any argument that goes on in this list shouldn't be regarded as `personal', or taken personally. I enter into arguments to express my view about something and learn about someone else's view of it - like they say, a good debater can prepare for both pro and con - and not to purposely go around stomping on other people's toes. It's funny how this all links up to those `no reliance on words' discussions we were having a while back. Because a list discussion like this is *only* words, and something like this just goes to illustrate how much can get lost in the `translation' of thought to word to perception.
