>> Personally, I'd rather "have" his ideas and his stories, which he did
more than touch--he labored over them. If we subject Salinger to the
treatment accorded a Hollywood star, we are lowering his work as well to
the level of those mass-culture icons. Salinger is an icon, sure, but of a
far, far different kind.<<

Hear hear. On a listserv, of all places, we should understand that it is
primarily the ideas that we are relating to, debating, defending and
enjoying. While I'm sure a chat with Salinger would be extremely
interesting, I don't see how possessing his fingerprints will change my
opinions or enjoyment of his work - as Valerie says `he's a writer, not a
God' - which is a distinction us starstruck bananafishers sometimes find
difficult to heed.

I found it doubly interesting (and ironic) that Mort was so worried about
me posting one of his e-mails on bananafish and infringing his privacy when
this is exactly what he was proposing to do to Salinger!

And thus I reiterate - `Walk a mile in another man's shoes.' (:

That's a sincere smile by the way. No one forces any of us to be here. I
want it to be enjoyable as much as I'm sure everyone else does.

I would have thought my post was begging for peace. I certainly don't want
to enter into one and I hope the topic doesn't come up again.
